I would really appreciate if you would disseminate the following to _excellen_t students that you may be guiding at the moment or that have just finished and are looking for a PhD position: I have a number of possible bursary proposals on /Lactococcus lactis/ as well as /Enterococcus faecalis/ research in the frame of our yearly Ubbo Emmius Scholarship awards. Seventeen (17) new Ubbo Emmius Scholarships are available at the Groningen Graduate School of Science (University of Groningen, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences). Information can be found at [http://www.rug.nl/gradschoolscience/scholarships/phdscholarships/ue2009/index]

Also, an additional 4 joint UE Scholarships are available in the frame of a cooperation between FMNS and the Faculty for Medical Sciences (UMCG/FMW).

Candidates for the UE scholarships will be selected in two rounds. The first round,  (*deadline 01 May 2009*) entails selection of candidates on quality only: about 50 candidates will be selected on the basis of application materials including a letter of motivation, academic transcripts, and several reference letters.

Each candidates will then be asked to contact a potential thesis advisor and write a PhD proposal. In the second round, a definite selection will take place on the basis of the application materials, the project proposal, and a (tele-)interview. Final selection will take place in late June 2009, at which time potential supervisors (promotors) will express their willingness to host the candidate. Students awarded UE scholarships are expected to enroll as a cohort in the fall of 2009.
